Celestial Bodies, Ocean Songs: Gestational Sound Space
Restful listening and shared ritual through underwater sounds and mythology.
A meditative experience, exploring the notion of ‘gestational waters’ through restful listening and shared rituals. I guided audience members on a journey using the World Ocean's Passive Acoustic Monitoring Project's archive of underwater sounds, and storytelling to reimagine the ancient mythology of the seven sisters of the Pleiades star cluster. They are known in Igbo as the Inyom Asaa, guardians of The Seven Seas.
The event was a response to Market Gallery's Resource Library. I drew inspiration from Bodies of Water by Astrida Neimanis, as well as the watery origins of Nsibidi. Nsibidi is a West African symbolic writing system said to have been taught by mermaids, and to have emerged from the echoing depths of underwater realms.
This began developing the narrative and sound exploration for a longer-term immersive project, Celestial Bodies, Ocean Songs.
